Continuing Education

Continuing Education

Description:

Continuing education offers high interest general education courses though personal enrichment, development, and post-secondary learning activities. The Office of Correctional Education provides two types of continuing education: E-Learning and Lifelong Learning. E-Learning is a formalized teaching and learning system specifically designed to be carried out remotely through the use of electronic communication. It is also referred to as distance learning or digital learning. E-Learning is not constrained by geographic considerations; it offers opportunities in situations where traditional classroom education is difficult. Inmate-students with scheduling problems can benefit because E-Learning allows for more flexibility and can be delivered virtually anywhere. Lifelong Learning courses are designed for inmate-students who are 62 years of age and older. Lifelong Learning courses provide opportunities for older inmate-students to foster the continuous development and improvement of knowledge and skills in areas of interest and personal fulfillment. Participation in educational endeavors by the older inmate-student is generally not for credit or formal recognition, but primarily for immediate application, personal satisfaction, and socialization. Lifelong Learning courses help inmate-students stay physically and mentally active through exercise, good nutritional awareness, and critical thinking through social interactions..
